چکیده

Infections with protozoa parasites are associated with high burdens of morbidity and mortality across the developing world. Despite extensive efforts to control the transmission of these parasites, the spread of populations resistant to drugs and the lack of effective vaccines against them contribute to their persistence as major public health problems. Parasites should perform a strict control on the expression of genes involved in their pathogenicity, differentiation, immune evasion, or drug resistance, and the comprehension of the mechanisms implicated in that control could help to develop novel therapeutic strategies. However, until now these mechanisms are poorly understood in protozoa. Recent investigations into gene expression in protozoa parasites suggest that they possess many of the canonical machineries employed by higher eukaryotes for the control of gene expression at transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and epigenetic levels, but they also contain exclusive mechanisms. Here, we review the current understanding about the regulation of gene expression in Plasmodium sp., Trypanosomatids, Entamoeba histolytica and Trichomonas vaginalis.

Epigenetic Regulation of Virulence Gene Expression in Parasitic Protozoa

Protozoan parasites colonize numerous metazoan hosts and insect vectors through their life cycles, with the need to respond quickly and reversibly while encountering diverse and often hostile ecological niches. To succeed, parasites must also persist within individuals until transmission between hosts is achieved. Several parasitic protozoa cause a huge burden of disease in humans and livestock...

Gene Expression in Trypanosomatid Parasites

The parasites Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma brucei, and Trypanosoma cruzi are the trypanosomatid protozoa that cause the deadly human diseases leishmaniasis, African sleeping sickness, and Chagas disease, respectively. These organisms possess unique mechanisms for gene expression such as constitutive polycistronic transcription of protein-coding genes and trans-splicing. Little is known about ei...

Canonical and variant histones of protozoan parasites.

Protozoan parasites have tremendously diverse lifestyles that require adaptation to a remarkable assortment of different environmental conditions. In order to complete their life cycles, protozoan parasites rely on fine-tuning gene expression. In general, protozoa use novel regulatory elements, transcription factors, and epigenetic mechanisms to regulate their transcriptomes. One of the most su...

Epidemiologic Survey of Intestinal Parasites in School Children of Shahriar in 1993

To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in school children of Shariar, 1902 students (58 % male, 42 % female) were randomly selected from 22 schools in rural and urban regions of Shahriar. After filling out a questionnaire from the selected students, fresh stool samples were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites and determining this tynos. The age of study population wa...

The transcription machinery and the molecular toolbox to control gene expression in Toxoplasma gondii and other protozoan parasites.

The phylum of Apicomplexa groups a large variety of obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that exhibit complicated life cycles, involving transmission and differentiation within and between different hosts. Little is known about the level of regulation and the nature of the factors controlling gene expression throughout their life stages. Unravelling the mechanisms that govern gene regulat...
